Emergency Fund: How Much Do You Need and Where Should You Keep It?

How to determine the right emergency fund size of 3–6 months' expenses, a step-by-step accumulation roadmap, and appropriate storage options for Vietnamese families.

An emergency fund is your first line of financial defense — even before insurance and investments. Job loss, car breakdown, family member hospitalized: without an emergency fund, every crisis turns into debt.

How Much Do You Need?

General rule: 3–6 months of essential expenses (not 3–6 months of income).

  • Stable job, both spouses working: 3 months.
  • Single income source, with young children or dependent parents: 4–5 months.
  • Self-employed, business owner, freelancer: 6 months or more.

Example: A family with essential monthly expenses of 15 triệu VND, stable salaried job → target fund of 45 triệu VND.

3-Stage Accumulation Roadmap

  1. Stage 1 — First 10 triệu VND: the most important psychological milestone. Set aside a fixed amount immediately when you receive your salary (before spending), even if it's just 1–2 triệu VND/month.
  2. Stage 2 — 1 month of expenses: enough to handle most minor emergencies. Supplement with bonuses and side income.
  3. Stage 3 — 3–6 months of expenses: complete your safety net. After this milestone, idle money should be moved into long-term investments.

Where Should You Keep Your Fund?

Three criteria: accessible within 1–2 days, capital preservation, reasonable returns.

ChannelAdvantagesNotes
Online savings deposits with 1–3 month termsHigher interest than non-term deposits, online withdrawalSplit into multiple smaller deposits for flexibility
Interest-bearing payment accounts with auto-sweepInstant withdrawalLower interest, choose reputable banks
Money market fund certificatesGood returns, T+1/T+2 withdrawalRead fee schedules carefully before purchasing

You should not keep your emergency fund in stocks, individual corporate bonds, gold, or cryptocurrency — their values fluctuate sharply right when you need the money most.

When Can You Use the Fund?

Only use it for these three things: income loss, medical needs, mandatory repairs. A new phone or a good travel deal is not an emergency. Whatever you use, prioritize replenishing the fund fully before returning to investing.
